I'm using this journal to expand a bit more on the characters in the film (particularly for those wanting to audition for a role and would like more insight into their character of choice).
Ryan is the main character. He's generally quiet but well-liked. His best subjects are science and art (with particular leanings towards physics and drawing). He prefers art, but his dad would rather see him succeed in science. He's usually in a good mood and tries to please those around him, but we don't see much of that side of him in the film. Due to a recent realization, Ryan feels conflicted. He decided to break up with his girlfriend of four years because he wanted to be honest with her, and with himself. But he isn't sure if he's ready to go all the way and be with the person that he really wants to be with.
Ryan's sister, Kendell, is about four or five years younger than him. She's bubbly and girly. She's a big daydreamer and sees Ryan's relationship with Jessica as perfection or true love. She hopes that one day she can also experience a similar relationship. She also sees Jessica as an older sister. She's crushed when Ryan breaks up with Jessica. To her, it is as bad as the idea of her parents getting a divorce.
Ryan's Mom is a housewife. Family is very important to her and she loves to cook for them. She has the most speaking lines in the film (I was surprised to note this, since I thought she was more of a quiet character). To a certain extent, she is like Kendell in thinking of Ryan's relationship with Jessica as the dream couple, and she is upset to learn that Jessica will not become her daughter-in-law.
Ryan's Dad is a proud man. He's a university professor of chemistry and is happy to see that his son has the potential to follow in his footsteps. He's very traditionalistic, maintaining a strong sense of the nuclear family unit, having dinner all together at the dining room table every night, and generally expecting good behaviour and appearances from his immediate family. He goes into denial when his son breaks up with his girlfriend, and believes that they'll get back together in no time.
Ryan's Best Friend is outgoing and sporty. She's on their high school's girls' soccer team. She's been best friends with Ryan since they were kids. She tends not to have stable relationships but secretly hopes that one day she will fall in love and eventually get married. She sees Ryan's relationship with Jessica as an example of her goal, but when he breaks up with her, she feels betrayed. If even he can't keep a lasting relationship, how could she possibly ever hope to herself?
Ryan's (ex-)girlfriend, Jessica, is kind, pretty, and fairly self-confident. She loves surprises and gifts, helping others, and going to the movies with Ryan. She actually doesn't appear all that much in the film due to the fact that it's Ryan's thoughts that we are seeing most of the time, and she isn't the biggest thing on his mind, rather, he's focused more on the event of the break-up and on the smiling face of the Guy. Jessica is naturally upset when Ryan breaks up with her, but tries her best not to cry in front of him.
Guy, as in a guy or a male teenager, is a relatively silent and ambiguous character in this film. His only vocalization is laughter. Ryan has obviously kept him a secret from all his family and friends. Guy represents stability, confidence, freedom, and happiness to Ryan. He is a carefree character with a warm laugh and a bit of a sweet tooth. He is in love with Ryan and is willing to wait until Ryan is ready for him.
Well, that sums it up for the roles. I am really excited to be taking on this project and to be getting near the end of my one year program. I can't believe how much I've learned in such a short amount of time, and I'm really looking forward to everything that I still have to learn and all the projects that I'll be taking on in the future.
Till next time,
Lynor
